Around of Gulf

We left the Georgian Motel in Carrabelle, Florida with its quaint miniature garden to continue our ride around the Gulf. The owner had informed us about Dog Island and St George Island where she regularly snorkels. "I wouldn't go anywhere around here without a mask and snorkel," she said.

We decided to visit St George Island since it was on our way. Following the shoreline we saw houses on stilts and a shore with white sand. Parts of the sand had the remnants of trees or mangroves only along the edge now covered with sand..
It has been here a long time as the timber is well weatheredand shaped by the elements.
We crossed the bridge to St George Island...
...turning left at the light house.
The whole island is sandy and can only support low grassy vegetation. These holiday homes are all on stilts. Only one home owner has attempted to formalise the garden with two rows of palm trees leading to the front door. The rest sit on the natural sandscape.
The top of the island is designated as a state park. You pay an entry fee per person and enter a section with sandy dunes.
At the beach the water has no chill as you enter. Once in Wanda was reluctant to leave. Chris enjoyed a swim, too, but couldn't stay out too long in the sun for risk of burning There were schools of tiny fry on the water's edge and larger fish in deeper water. A mask and snorkel woul be fun.
These sand crabs appeared from nowhere. When they sensed danger they burrowed into the sand within a few seconds.
Apart from one or two sea-gulls this was the only bird scampering along the edge of the water looking for food.
There is no shelter in the hot sun unless you bring your own. This also applies to food and drink. The environment is pristine.
At regular intervals there are parking lots with washrooms,
boardwalks and three or four large shelter sheds with seating.
We both showered. There was no need for a change of clothes. Our wet clothes kept us cool for a while as we drove on towards Fort Walto Beach.
Chris took a rest under the palm trees on the way. Otherewise there was very little shade.
Water slides.
