Stone Bridges

We left Green River with our GPS programmed to take us to Hanksville.

This took us 10 miles west on I-70 before turning south on UT 24. This road was gun barrel straight for most of the trip and we made good speed. The scenery was impressive. Wildly sculpted rocks and moutains grew out of the surrounding landscape

We stopped at the Red Rock restaurant for brunch before turning onto UT 96. In the distance we could see a dusting of snow on some high peaks.

UT 95 crossed the Colorado River in Glen Canyon at the upper end of Lake Powell.

All around the scenery was wild and rugged.

The road we travelled tracked along the top of White Canyon but offered no views into it.

Further down the road we passed Cheese Box Butte.

A little further on we turned into the Stone Bridges National Monument, where a 9 mile loop road leads to three spectaculr stone bridges in White Canyon. There were also some Anasazi cliff dwellings that could be viewed at the end of a path.

Our road south crossed the tableland...
...until it suddenly ended, and we had to thread our way down into the valley below on three miles of gravel road with no barriers.

Our destination for the night was Mexican Hat, a tiny town named for the rock formation nearby.

Wanda went down by the river at San Juan Inn where we stayed for the night and took these photos.
