Heading for the Adirondack Mountains

The Adirondack Mountains and many scenic rides lie ahead. We are a day behind our planned schedule, but we have some tiime before we are due to arrive at Bruce Fink's home in Woodstock CT, which means we can make up that day...

We left Warren after a restless night, thanks to all the heavy trucks roaring past throughout the night. Heading east on Pennsylvania 59, we travelled 40 miles to Smethport where we stopped for brunch at a 50's style diner, complete with rock and roll music from the era. The friendly young woman, starting a new business, was doing an exceptionally good job.

Forests, farms and pretty small towns along the way. The speed limits are lower but the trip is enjoyable.

We continued east through Caudersport before turning up Pennsylvania 49 into New York state and on towards Corning - where the glassware of the same name is made.

Turning onto New York 414 we soon found ourselves in Watkins Glen - famous for its motor racing circuit which we passed on our way. We stopped for drinks to refresh ourselves. The temperature was in the mid 80's and the humidity felt about the same. Time was getting on, and we still had a long way to go.
A lovely door at a cafe/pub in Watkins Glen.

Our route took us next to Ithaca, a rather large town we had initially set as our target destination for today. We had made good time , so we decided to press on a bit further and stopped in Cortland. The Imperial Motel was good value, with all the facilities, as well as being located near city central.

We went looking for a supermarket and liquor store. We didn't find the former, but we were advised a liquor store was "three blocks" down the road. After travelling four blocks we were advised it was down the road, "not more than half a mile". Everyone was sitting on their balconies or outside hoping for a cool change. We plodded on, finally found the place and bought a bottle of wine.

On the way back we stopped at a pizza parlour to buy dinner. While we waited for our pizza the television began flashing warnings of a severe hailstorm for Cortland. It started raining lightly: Wanda decided it would be best if she left immediately. Why should both of us get wet? I agreed and off she went. Eventually the pizza was ready and I took off after Wanda. Fortunately it didn't rain much and both of us only had a refreshing shower.

Rain is forecast for tomorrow.
