Biscuits and Gravy

Today we had planned to ride north and east towards Detroit, but Marilyn and Dick invited us to stay a third night. Marilyn and Wanda could then have a mini-shindig making jewellery. They really didn't have to twist our arms very hard to get us to agree, although this means that we will have to ride 260 miles tomorrow to reach Trenton, MI where our friends Warren and Cindy live.

Marilyn taught Wanda a few techniques with soldering copper rings to make a bracelet. It was a rewarding, if exhausting experience. Marilyn has some lovely pieces which must have taken some time to complete. She knows what is needed to finish a piece properly and does not skimp on time. She has also developed faster processes.

Chris caught up with the blogging, which seemed to take forever. It's hard to concentrate when you are constantly being interrupted by wildlife just outside their dining room window which has a superb forest view. It is so amazing we couldn't stop photographing it.

Around lunchtime we all went into town and had lunch at a cafe near Dick's office. Several of Dick's friends dropped in and stopped to chat. One was a former editor of the local newspaper who was quite taken to hear of our trip around America.

Later in the afternoon, a young reporter Thad Lewis, came out to Dick and Marilyn's to interview us about our travels.

We later went out to dinner where we tried a uniquely American dish: biscuits and gravy. At the shindig the week before, another of our friends, Susan, had extolled the virtues of this dish. Chris thought it sounded quite unappetizing, but Susan was adamant that we try them while we are in the US. We ordered a half serve to share. The biscuits were soft like scones, and not sweet which was good. The gravy was a white creamy sauce. The gravy is supposed to have sausage in it, but I don't think this was a sausage gravy . It was a far better dish than the name suggests, but we won't be rushing to have it again.

Taking a walk with Dick and his dogs at night to observe the sky in the Northern Hemisphere and seeing the very surprising fire-flies was an experience to remember.
