Read all about it!!

We arose this morning to find we had made front page news in the local paper, the News Examiner. Our fifteen minutes of fame!

Dick kindly made us breakfast and we packed ready for a long day's ride (265 miles) to Trenton, which is a town on the south side of Detroit.

Warren had sent us an email to say he has purchased tickets to the baseball game tonight, so we needed to be there earlier rather than later. Given the distance to travel, we decided reluctantly that we had no option but to take the Interstate roads we have previously been at such pains to avoid. We said our goodbyes and headed off.

After a period of days with temperatures in the high 70's, the forecast for today was for a maximum of 91 F and even as we prepared to leave Marilyn and Dick's there was that heaviness in the air that is a sure sign of a hot day developing.

We made very good speed across I-70 east into Ohio. We had been warned that traffic is usually heavy on this road and much of it is trucks. The traffic wasn't too bad, but the temperature was climbing.

We turned north on I-75 just north of Dayton and stopped for petrol and cold drinks. The menu at the diner we stopped at had "Mush" as an item on the menu, but after biscuits and gravy the previous day, we weren't curious enough to order it.

We continued to keep a good speed up as we tracked north, and the miles rolled by beneath our wheels. The traffic on I-75 seemed even heavier than on I-70. We made a couple more stops to take in more liquids as the temperature soared to 96 F. When we passed a truck transporting hot molten sulphur, we began to wonder if we weren't on a highway to hell.

We arrived at Warren and Cindy's at 3:30 pm, about a half hour ahead of our target. The beer Warren offered was the coldest part of a warm welcome.

We cleaned up and changed into more appropriate clothing before having an early dinner and heading off to the ball game at the Comerica Stadium in downtown Detroit.

The Detroit Tigers were playing the Baltimore Aurioles and were favourites to win. After 4 innings everything was going according to plan with the Tigers scoring a run in the bottom of the fourth.

A few innings later though everything went base over apex as the Aurioles ran in four runs in one innings. They then scored another run a few innings later. With just two innings remaining the Tigers were 4 runs down. They managed two runs in the eighth, and another two in the ninth to tie the game. This meant playing until one team took the lead. Neither scored in the tenth, and the Aurioles did not score in the top of the eleventh. However, the Tigers scored a home run in the eleventh to seal the win.

It was a fantastic experience to go to a ball game, one we will remember always.
